Frequently Asked Questions
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help eligible patients experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. I take on the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while Journey Clinical’s medical team supports you on all medical aspects. This includes determining eligibility, developing a custom treatment plan, prescribing the medicine and monitoring outcomes.
In a recent training hosted by Journey Clinical, Dr. Ingmar Gorman, PhD (Co-Founder of
Fluence) and Dr. Kwasi Adusei DNP PMHNP responded to commonly asked questions
about Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). Their answers can be explored below.
Is Ketamine safe?
Ketamine has a strong medical record
“Ketamine has been used worldwide in hospitals for decades. It’s on the World Health
Organization’s list of essential medicines and used in every hospital around the world.
Because of its high safety profile, Ketamine is commonly used in pediatrics. In the
context of KAP, Journey Clinical prescribes smaller, sub-anesthetic doses.”

Journey Clinical has rigorous safety protocols. Not everyone is eligible for KAP.
“Journey Clinical’s medical team does a really thorough evaluation, and if it’s not safe,
they won’t prescribe. If you’re not eligible, you’re refunded your intake, so it’s very
cautious. The dosing takes place in a controlled, supportive environment, and you’ll also
see the medical team for follow-ups to monitor outcomes.”

Therapeutic vs. recreational use
Recreational misuse and therapeutic use are very different—In the context of KAP,
ketamine is prescribed and administered under medical supervision with limited,
controlled dosing.
“It’s true ketamine can be misused recreationally, but in KAP, it’s prescribed legally at
much lower doses. Ketamine has been an FDA-approved anesthetic for decades, and
we use it under medical supervision so it’s safe and structured. Ketamine is perfectly
legal in medical contexts. It’s used in hospitals worldwide. We follow strict protocols to
ensure safety”

“Psychedelics are non-specific amplifiers. Without supervision, you hear ‘party drug’
stories. But in a therapeutic context with the right set, setting, and support, we actually
reduce risks significantly. In a safe container with screening, dosing protocols, and
therapy, negative outcomes are greatly minimized.”

EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic modality which research has proven to be effective in managing the effects of traumatic memories and responses. Trauma can be a single event (i.e. sexual assault) or complex, accumulated from years of several stressful memories. Your body stores trauma in a variety of forms. Headaches, insomnia, muscle pain/fatigue, panic attacks, and re-experiencing are common symptoms. The Brain is a naturally healing mechanism and it has an innate capacity to reduce/eliminate physiological arousal to triggers. Generally individuals find relief much more quickly than with traditional talk therapies. EMDR promotes healing from psychological trauma, much like your body heals from physical trauma.
Brainspotting works on the premise that where your eyes are oriented in space is a window into the subconscious area of the brain which contains the relevant information. This sounds much more complicated than it is. You’ve likely already done this – for example, when you look up to the ceiling when you’re trying to recall someone’s name.
